CIVIC ASSOCIATION SUPPORT FOR FBAC — VOICE YOUR SUPPORT IN PERSON

Brian Gross (who edits and sends these FBAC newsletters) is also Communications chair at our civic association (VHCA). Brian proposed to John Wolfinger, Safety chair, that VHCA budget for a $3600 community grant to FBAC. There will be a VHCA meeting on Monday 2/13 at 7 P.M. (@ the library 980 Ponce de Leon Ave., back-left entrance)— if you feel strongly that the VHCA should make this grant you are encouraged to attend the meeting. Note that the public vote does not decide if the grant goes through — the VHCA Board vote does. Your attendance will, rather, provide an indication of the level of interest in this proposal. In other words, we are asking for you to attend if you support this strongly and wish you voice that support at the meeting and participate in the discussion.

Why a $3600 community grant to FBAC and not more?

realistically, the elected Board of the VHCA bought the land for New Highland Park and has a large mortgage to pay off
as a result, a limited amount of funding is available for other major budget items
But! there is budget (in the very low tens of thousands of dollars) for community grants; every year VHCA makes these grants
$3600 is along the lines of grants to similar community institutions (libraries, schools, Trees Atlanta, etc.)
Safety is a top concern of the community and thus VHCA, yet even this $3600 represents just slightly more than 1% of the VHCA’s yearly budget
$3600 is about 5% of FBAC’s yearly costs — it really helps us, but is small enough to mean that VHCA is NOT actually funding a particular patrol service (which might make it potentially liable, one of the VHCA’s concerns)
A much higher amount of funding (than $3600) by the VHCA would require a level of oversight by VHCA — or even becoming a part of VHCA, which FBAC does not wish to undertake

In other words, a much higher amount funding by VHCA seems impractical at the moment, but this $3600 is a way for the VHCA to show real support for public safety in Virginia-Highland.

Public Safety Town Hall with APD and Alex Wan - Tues 11/ 15

On Tuesday, November 15, Alex Wan will be hosting a town hall meeting with Zone 6 Commander Dalton and Zone 2 Commander Browning to discuss the recent criminal activity that has been taking place in and around our neighborhood. The forum will also provide you an opportunity to ask questions and for Atlanta Police to share how we can work together to deter this activity from our community, particularly as the holidays approach.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm at the YWCA located at 957 North Highland Avenue.
